Key Factors Influencing Screen Time to Word Count Correlation

  1. Screenplay Formatting:

    • A screenplay is written in a specific format, including spacing, margins, and font (typically 12-point Courier).

    • On average, a single page of a screenplay contains around 200–250 words.

  2. Dialogue vs. Action:

    • Dialogue-heavy scenes: Fewer words can cover more screen time because of pauses, pacing, and delivery.

    • Action-heavy scenes: May require more descriptive text to account for quick visual events. For instance, 250 words of action could translate into just 30 seconds of screen time.

  3. Pacing and Style:

    • Fast-paced films may condense more words into a shorter duration.

    • Slower, dramatic sequences may stretch fewer words over a longer screen time.

  4. Genre-Specific Variations:

    • Comedies: Often dialogue-heavy, with fewer words per minute.

    • Action films: Tend to have detailed descriptions of scenes, which may inflate the word count without a proportional increase in screen time.

General Estimate

  • Screenplay Word Count: A standard feature-length screenplay (~90–120 minutes) contains roughly 18,000 to 25,000 words.

  • Screen Time Per Word: On average, 7–9 words per second of screen time for dialogue. This varies significantly for action or montage scenes.

Practical Correlation

  • 1 minute of screen time ≈ 1 page of screenplay ≈ 200–250 words.

Example

  • A 90-minute movie will typically have a screenplay of 90–120 pages or approximately 18,000–30,000 words depending on the balance of dialogue and description.
